Existing I/DD Housing & Government Advocacy Committee

Improving access, equity, and understanding in housing for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD)

Our Focus

The Existing I/DD Housing and Government Advocacy Committee is committed to ensuring that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) have access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. We focus on improving housing systems, advocating for necessary policy changes, and ensuring government-supported programs truly serve the needs of people with autism and/or I/DD (A/I/DD).

What We Do

We work at the intersection of housing and government policy to drive real, practical change. Our priorities include:

  • Advocating for fair and increased access to housing vouchers, including rental assistance programs.

  • Collaborating with housing authorities and state agencies to clarify and improve how housing voucher systems operate.

  • Identifying and addressing barriers within federal, state, and local policies that make it difficult for people with I/DD to secure housing.

  • Providing information on public and private resources for housing, service provision and advocacy.

Our committee brings together families, self-advocates, service providers, and policy professionals who care deeply about inclusive housing access.

Meeting

Why It Matters

People with I/DD face disproportionate barriers to finding and maintaining affordable housing that meets their needs. Complex systems, unclear processes, and a lack of specialized supports often stand in the way.

We believe every person deserves a place to call home—and that with the right advocacy, collaboration, and accountability, public systems like housing vouchers and HUD programs can work better for the people they’re meant to serve.
